No matter how much optimism we are able to breath, life will disappoint us, and even crush us at some point. The solution is not to become less optimistic, but rather more optimistic. This is the strongest counterattack because it saves us from becoming bitter and cynical, and it preserves our faith despite the earth-shattering things that life may throw at us. Optimism is not naivety. Optimism is the faith that no matter what, life goes on, and when life goes on, anything is possible. Good and bad are nothing but transient. We can decide how strong we hold on to them.
